Dear Friend of YSI,

Happy holidays! Thank you for your past support helping us deliver hands-on science to over 30,000 children this year! Teachers and families alike rely on YSI to provide the hands-on science experiences they cannot provide on their own, yet are so critical in the development of 21st Century skills, especially critical thinking skills.

YSI is the “S” “T” and “E” in STEM.

We’re encouraged by the increased awareness of the critical importance of STEM education locally and nationally (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.) But it takes more than awareness — it takes a commitment to STEM education through investment in quality programs, equipment, and delivery systems that can meet the need for quality science education — exactly YSI’s daily work.

Unfortunately, too many children never get the kind of hands-on science education that YSI delivers, because our schools simply cannot provide it. With time, training, and money scarce, teaching hands-on science in the classroom is practically impossible for most teachers. Nationwide, students spend an average of only 16 minutes per week on science!

Hands-on science improves literacy and overall achievement.

It’s not news that U.S. children are falling further and further behind their international counterparts in science and math achievement. YSI’s interactive programs in natural, physical, earth, and social sciences engage pre-K through eighth-grade students’ hands as well as their minds. Studies show that children who learn via hands-on science score higher in math, reading and writing than their peers who receive no hands-on science instruction; and, English language learners improve their literacy skills.

YSI is an expert in our field — just ask the classroom teachers we serve.

Teachers tell us year after year that they return to YSI because of the quality of YSI’s content and delivery; their students literally dig-in to hands-on experiences and experiments that illustrate the scientific concepts that shape our world. By using critical thinking to solve problems, students hone the skills necessary for academic and life-long success. YSI feeds children’s curiosity, ignites their imaginations, and helps develop a thirst for science and a love of learning that lasts!

Help us teach kids science!

For nearly 60 years YSI has been igniting a passion for science, nature, and learning. We leverage our resources by earning half of our income through deeply discounted fees charged for program delivery, and raise the other half from donors like you — people who care about science education in our community.

Please make a tax-deductible gift to YSI today. You can give online securely at www.youthscience.org or by mail using the enclosed envelope.

Join us in bringing the wonder and impact of science and nature to thousands of children this year. Your support enables us to make a needed impact in our schools with the Science programming children need and deserve.

Sincerely,

Susanne Mulcahy

Executive Director
